The reserve is located in the eastern part of Naryn oblast, on the greater side of Naryn-Too range at the place of Naryn River middle course. The reserve area is 36.9 thousand ha; preservation or a buffer zone covers 53.4 thousand ha.
Unique natural complexes of internal Tien-Shan are the objects of protection in the reserve. The objects include high mountain spruce forests, Alpine meadows, glaciers and other systems. More than 45 types of birds and 21 types of mammals inhabit the area and they are registered in the Red Book of the Kyrgyz Republic, among them snow leopard, maral, bear, argali, lynx, golden eagle, saker falcon, ibis-bill, bearded vulture and Himalayan griffon. About 1800 types of plants grow in the reserve.
Naryn state reserve has all conditions to attract tourists to enjoy wildlife of internal Tien-Shan, namely fresh air, clear mountain streams, a magnificent mountain landscape and a possibility to see wild animals in the natural conditions. Besides, the reserve contains unique natural objects and historical monuments mentioned in folk epics.
A significant factor for attraction of tourists is
infrastructure – roads, hotels, communications, transport, etc. An earth road
leads to the village nearest to the reserve. From that village one can get to
the reserve by off-highway vehicles. The reserve has a sufficient number of
personnel and horses. Horses are used as a means of transportation over the
reserve. Depending on the stay period, Naryn state reserve offers three tours:
− 1-2 day tour: Naryn - Iyri-Suu - Kara-Tash - Ak-Tashat - Utch-Bulak -
Kashka-Suu - Kara-Tash. From Kara-Tash, tourist will be taken to the places
connected with Er Tabyldy epic.
− 4-5 day route: Naryn - Ken-Saz - Korkurak - Moldo-Bashy - Kara-Tash - Naryn.
One can use an off-highway vehicle to go through Naryn - Ken-Saz – Korkurak and
then ride a horse. In Moldo-Bashy area one can meet wild animals and enjoy
seeing a natural monument.
− 7-8 day route: Naryn – Ken-Saz - Korkurak – Ulan and back. Otherwise,
tourists can go down from Ulan. It will take them one day to walk from a high
mountain szyrt to the Issyk-Kul, Barskaun. This route covers the major part of
the reserve. In Ulan area, the landscape is that of high mountain plateaus and
szyrts. During the trip, tourists will be able to see wild animals.
Naryn state reserve was organized in conformity with the decision of the Kyrgyz Republic government. The reserve is in the area of the northern side of Naryn-Too range, about 40-50 km eastward from Naryn city. In the reserve area, there are well preserved spruce forests. The main task of the reserve is protection and preservation of habitat of rare and endangered species of animals: Tien-Shan roe (maral), snow leopard, brown bear, lynx, argali, manul cat, golden eagle, saker falcon, bearded vulture and ibis-bill. The same thick spruce forests are on the northern side of Naryn-Too.
